Building on Matomo, learn how to use the new Clean Insights SDK from Guardian Project to maximum privacy of your users, while measuring key events to gain valuable insights from your mobile, web and desktop app users.

Clean Insights gives developers a way to plug into secure, private measurement tools built upon Matomo as the back-end. It is focused on assisting in answering key questions about app usage patterns, and not on enabling invasive surveillance of all user habits. Our approach provides programmatic levers to pull to cater to specific use cases and privacy needs. It also provides methods for user interactions that are ultimately empowering instead of alienating.

Clean Insights is available as a lightweight, minimal impact, freely licensed toolkit to include in your mobile app, desktop app, website or back-end service. This code can be integrated into your application or service to measure specific events and interactions that you want to gain more insight on. In addition, using the Clean Insights Matomo Proxy (CIMP), these client toolkits can send data to any Matomo Server with additional privacy protections beyond the default SDKs.

Wenn man seine Anwendung wie z.B.
Back in 2010 I took the bet of writing a web page about Piwik in order to rank first about the following keywords "Piwik training" within search engines. Some months later, a huge company contacted me asking for a training about it... and here started my story about getting revenues from Matomo Analytics. Now in 2021 I am fully living from the services I am providing about Matomo Analytics. In this conference I will explain about the different projects I had the chance to run dealing with Matomo Analytics, dos and don'ts.
Hope you will enjoy it.

Build forms with the included form builder and customize fields and values.
After creating a form, you can display this form anywhere on your website (as long as you use Matomos Tag Manager).
You can also customize how to display the forms.
We have built in support for:
-Overlay display
-Feedback button
-Raw (inline)
It is also easy to add you custom styling to the forms

After publishing a form to your site, feedback data will be collected in Matomo and you can also use Matomos "Segments" to filter down you results.

Where are we on the adoption curve of surveillance technologies? Are all slippery slopes arguments - stating that a small backdoor can lead to big violations - fallacies? And what is at stake with an increase in surveillance and loss of privacy?

Let me lay out a bleak scenario.

We have accepted the loss of our reality privilege and transitioned from physical into information beings. We are floating merrily in our preferred metaverses. We are all friendly neighbours, and we are all hostile tribesmen. Every one of us is watched, and every one of us is a watcher. There are no barriers, and the gathering of data about our actions to use them in ways not designed for our benefit is continuous.

Yet the source of the gravest dangers to our freedom has not changed: those who want power, and willing to cross inviolable boundaries – set by morals, principles and the law. Our privacy is under attack, now more than ever, to document our behavior, to be used to monitor, influence, nudge and control.

We were not sure how this game of surveillance would play out. States now derive information about their populations not just from contents and metadata of their communications, but their DNA, location data, facial expressions and more. In certain jurisdictions all information about us have been centralized and is accessible to anyone with a police badge, making you a potential suspect every day. In other countries data is used to dangle carrots to aid panopticon style control, where the obedient thrive and the dissenting wither away.

Tech corporations now compare themselves to states, and want involvement in every aspect of our lives. They know more about us than we could comprehend. Phones are routinely scanned by the manufacturers to check whether you store incriminating materials on them. Privacy legislations provide too little protection too late, while fines don’t serve as deterrents: they are calculated cost of doing business. Businesses at the top use surveillance techniques not just to capture trillions of dollars of value, but to cooperate with the state to enhance their monitoring capabilities. Some citizens have accepted these developments, the rest are stuck in a paralysed, cynical state.

Are we talking about a potential future or the present?

Can you tell?

Let’s say it is the future. We can go back in time and rethink the boundaries, redraw the lines, and erect some fences. What would you differently and where would you stand?

Let’s say it is the present. Have your recent actions and work aided or challenged this reality?

A practical and accessible session delivered by Dr Katie Newby (Associate Professor, University of Hertfordshire) and Ronan Chardonneau (Associate Professor at IAE Angers and consultant) in which they will talk about how they have worked together to solve a research-related problem using Matomo; how to collect individual-level analytics data on participants engagement with intervention content.
In order to test the efficacy of an intervention, be it a new drug, healthcare product, or service, the gold standard approach is to conduct a randomised controlled trial. This involves randomly allocating participants to receive the intervention being tested or an alternative e.g. placebo. Data to measure the targeted outcome (e.g. improvement in health, wellbeing) is collected at baseline and then also at follow-up timepoints. In a clinical context, the ‘dose’ of the intervention is easily captured (e.g. one blue pill per day) but what if the intervention is delivered through web content? How do we know ‘how much’ of the intervention each participant receives? This is important; if at the end of the trial there is no difference in the outcome of interest between the
groups, without measuring dose how will we know if this because the intervention didn’t work or because it wasn’t used or used enough? We have designed a trial to test the efficacy of an intervention called Wrapped, a website targeting condom use. Our trial will be conducted online using the data capture and management platform REDCap. In this talk we will explain how we have set up Matomo to capture participants’ engagement with the intervention material so that we can measure dose. This has required us to work out how to pass participants’ unique research IDs from
REDCap through to Wrapped, and to capture and report individual-level data in Matomo. We are currently testing the set-up and will present early engagement data available.

In this talk I will explain web communication in general and why you need to know exactly what services you are using on your website to protect your users from having their personal data exploited by 3rd parties with unknown agendas.

I will also talk what the PII definition within GDPR means in practical terms when you are using a web analytics tool like Matomo.
I would argue that almost everyone that uses Matomo is storing PII without knowing so.

I will also talk about why Matomo is a good tool in these cases since we can actually act on these issues.

This workshop will provide a high-level overview of the project and walk through running code of an existing implementation. There will be an opportunity to discuss the process for determining the insights you want to gain, and considerations of how to build an effective, consensual user experience.
